Therapeutic Massage Kathy Chism, NCTMB

Maternity Massage for the Mom-to-Be!

The perfect gift for any pregnant woman past her first trimester...

Touch is vital to the mother's psychological and physiological well-being as she adapts to a changing body.  Massage provides a nurturing touch which, in turn, nurtures the life of the unborn child.

Important Note: When choosing a massage therapist for a pregnant woman, always choose someone certified in pregnancy massage.  This is because certain contraindications may exist, and in areas of the country where this training and/or certification is not required (i.e. many parts of California), the therapist may not be aware of the do's and dont's in working with a pregnant woman.

  Massage During Pregnancy:

  • Provides tranquil relaxation and lessens stress
  • Reduces back pain, edema, (swelling), and sciatica
  • Relieves the stress on weight-bearing joints (ankles, low back, pelvis)
  • Accelerates nutrients to mother and child
  • Stimulates the endocrine system, thereby stabilizing hormones
  • Increases muscle tone, enhancing metabolic function
  • Enhances the pliability of skin and underlying tissues
  • Brings an overall sense of well-being

 Maternity Massage Session Includes:

  • Swedish Massage
  • Reflexology
  • Acupressure
  • Deep Relaxation Techniques
  • Information on Contraindicated Herbs, Oils, and Pressure Points
  • Advice on Pressure Points to Use During Labor

For women in their 4th and 5th months of pregnancy, sometimes in their 6th month, and possibly (rarely) in their 7th month, Kathy utilizes a Body Cushionon the massage table. This is because in the prone position, ("face down"), it may be adjusted to accommodate various heights, widths, etc.  It also supports the hips properly and relieves pressure on the lower back.  Moms-to-Be love it!

Usually for pregnant women in their 6th and 7th months, and always in the 8th and 9th months, Kathy only works in the side lying positions with body pillows instead of "face down." This is critical for the safety of both mother and child.

For the second half of the massage, while supine, ("face up"), the pregnant client will be in a "chaise lounge" position.  Kathy is able to manipulate her state-of-the-art massage table into a truly comfortable "sitting" position that is relaxing and safe for both mother and child.
